Another Mom Banned Our Daughters' Friendship. What Would You Do?
Her daughter's best new friend is suddenly off-limits after a long message from the other mom. Have you ever been in the middle of a parent feud?
Hi, friends! We're so glad we've built a place where we can talk things through together. We regularly get questions from readers (and if there's something on your mind, please send it our way anytime!). Today's question is about kids' friendships. Our reader Diana would love your advice and your experiences:
Another mom won't let her daughter see mine
Dear StadtLandMama community, I'm writing because I can't stop thinking about a situation I'm in, and I'm hoping other parents can give me some advice on how to handle it.
My daughter recently made a new friend who means a lot to her. The girls get along great and have had a lot of playdates. I didn't know the girl's parents. We'd only had surface-level contact, mostly limited to sorting out logistics.
I'm a single parent, and I tend to be pretty structured about my daughter's plans with friends. It matters to me that the kids don't just make plans and head off on outings on their own, but that we talk it through and I'm on board beforehand. I'm also fairly cautious when it comes to longer outings with people I don't know myself. For me, that has nothing to do with distrusting anyone in particular. It's about my responsibility as the only parent making the decisions.
Then, out of the blue, I got a long message from the other mom. In it, she accused me of not trusting her and her family, of making "drama" out of harmless situations, and of being overprotective in general. She listed several older incidents that had clearly been bothering her for a while. I had no idea she was annoyed, because up to that point she had never talked to me directly or brought it up.
I answered calmly, cleared up a few misunderstandings, and explained the background behind certain decisions. Among other things, I was dealing with family stress she didn't know about. I made a point of saying it was never about distrusting her family. I never heard back.
Now, at the other mom's request, the girls aren't allowed to see each other anymore, and both of them are heartbroken. What I find especially hard is that the kids are paying the price for a conflict they didn't cause.
There's something else on my mind, too: in smaller social circles, people quickly form an opinion about someone when they only hear one side of the story. I've already seen tension between adults spill over onto the kids before. So I'm wondering how other parents handle situations like this.
Here's what I'd love to ask you:
* Have you ever seen a conflict between parents affect or end your kids' friendships?
* How did you handle it?
* Did you try to clear the air, or did you keep your distance?
* How do you keep your kids from getting caught in the middle?
* And what do you do when you've lost trust in the adults involved, but the kids still like each other?
I'd really appreciate honest experiences and different perspectives.
