Dear ones, when are children allowed to have earrings? And does it matter whether the child is a boy or a girl? These are exactly the questions our reader Lara is asking herself, as there are currently heated discussions at home about earrings for boys:
I think earrings on boys are stupid!
My name is Lara, I have two children, a girl (7) and a boy (9). Our daughter has wanted earrings for a long time and we gave her an ear piercing voucher for her birthday. A few weeks ago, our son suddenly started wanting earrings because the big boys in his basketball club have them too.
He would love to have really big „brillions“ on both sides – an idea that I find really creepy. Because I simply don’t like earrings on boys, either on one ear or both. I just find it pretentious.
Now my son hasn’t put his foot in his mouth and told me I’m sexist. If colours are for everyone, then earrings are for everyone – and if the only reason I would ban him from wearing earrings is because of his gender, then that’s just sexist. I totally understand this argument and yet it doesn’t change my opinion.
When it was trendy to have flashes shaved into your hairstyle, I also vetoed it. And earrings are something more permanent, which he might also find stupid at some point. Somehow earrings are different for girls, aren’t they?
