Katharina had to write a book without Lisa, and her inner critic had opinions. Here's how she shook it off and what 1-Minute Self-Care means for your day.
Hi, friends! Do you know what imposter syndrome is? Imposter syndrome describes the recurring feeling that you're incompetent, even though you have proven successes and skills, and that you only got to the top through luck or chance. I have a pretty strong case of it, and have for many years. I've written about it HERE before.
So of course it was imposter syndrome that spoke up at the beginning of this year, when I was offered the chance to write a book. My first thoughts weren't, "Oh, cool, what an opportunity." They were, "Help, I can't do this, and I especially can't do it without Lisa."
Lisa and I have written four books together and have worked as a team for 14 years. When you have a partner like that, there's always someone to step in when you hit a weak moment, someone to brainstorm with, someone to create something with. But doing it all by myself? I couldn't picture it…
At some point, though, I decided to just take it one step at a time, stay calm, and shake off the little devil sitting on my shoulder, the one whispering, "But what if nobody buys the book?" Because the topic of my book is so, so important: "1-Minute Self-Care for Moms."
And no, it's not about pricey spa treatments or wellness weekends. To me, self-care means paying attention to yourself, feeling like yourself again, setting boundaries, letting go of beliefs that don't do you any good, and figuring out again what brings you joy and makes you happy.
Self-Care in 1 Minute
Yes, you can do all of that in a single minute. Of course, one minute won't turn your whole life upside down, but one mindful minute can make all the difference when you're totally overstimulated. When you want to check in with yourself for a moment, when you want to calm down. And one minute is realistic in our packed days. Believe me, I know all too well how crazy some days can get…
My book is packed with tips, strategies, lists, quick check-ins, food for thought, and studies meant to encourage you and help you take better care of yourself. No finger-wagging, no lectures, just lots of warmth and understanding.
I've also devoted a few pages of the book to the imposter syndrome I described above, because I still battle little (and not-so-little) inner devils myself. I have days when I pay zero attention to myself and I'm just in "survival mode." But I've also learned to keep actively taking time out for myself.
1-Minute Self-Care is meant to give you a hug, meet you where you are in family life, and support you. I'd be sooooooo happy if you buy this book, or maybe give it to a friend or your sister. I hope it gives you fresh ideas for your life, warms you, comforts you, and gives you courage. I wish you all the best! Take good care of yourselves!
