A WhatsApp status from hell! Reader: “Just get on with living instead of posting”

Dear readers, we’ve received a question from a reader here, and perhaps you’re experiencing something similar and can offer some good advice in the comments. It’s about the constant comparisons that are made possible, among other things, by the endless stream of WhatsApp statuses… She writes:

Hello everyone, it’s the Whitsun holidays in some parts of the country right now, and lots of people are away. As a result, the WhatsApp statuses of a great many people are in full swing.

I’d be interested to know why people do this? Why do they post ten pictures every day? Sharing their alcoholic drinks, mostly Aperol, because it looks pretty against blue water. And writing things like: “Thanks to housekeeping” instead of simply leaving a 2-euro tip for the staff?

I recently heard a good friend say whilst posting: „Today I can show off a bit.“ And yesterday whilst out walking: These will make great photos for posting!

Last week, at breakfast in a café, someone photographed their plate and posted it with the words “Let’s make everyone jealous first”.
A neighbour once thanked me in her status update for going for a walk with her. This behaviour really annoys me now.

Does everything really have to be shared with everyone? Does the potential envy really make the experience more enjoyable? Does anyone really want friends like that? Does anyone want to be perceived that way by their own children? I find it a truly sad development…

The younger generation gives me hope; they don’t do that sort of thing at all. Snapchat flames are kept alive with meaningless pictures. Or how do you experience it?!
