Dear ones, we are still very attached to Steffi and her family. You probably know who we’re talking about. Dad and two of the three children were diagnosed with cancer.
Then ten-year-old Jonas died shortly before New Year’s Eve. They finally said goodbye to their dad Sebastian – then Steffi was also diagnosed with cancer – breast cancer. She has now started chemotherapy in the middle of the coronavirus crisis.
Dear Steffi, there was two pieces of good news for you today, why don’t you tell us about them – and what feelings came up in you.
I had my first check-up (sonogram) today after the first two chemo cycles and was really relieved to find out that the tumour has already shrunk by more than half.
The doctors were more than happy with this and the chemo can now continue as planned (as there are no other drug options for this type of tumour) – this will be followed by a mastectomy, i.e. the removal of breast tissue.
In addition, I was relieved to hear that nothing abnormal was found on Neele’s MRI. The rest of her body (from the knee down) will be scanned at the end of April as this part was not included in last week’s MRI because there were ‚problems’… so fingers crossed once again, but we are of course pleased that everything is fine with her from head to knee.
You have started with
chemo, how are you doing with it, how are you tolerating it?
I’m tolerating the chemo quite well so far – the first few days I’ve had a duller, more matte feeling and bone pain, but all in all it’s been bearable so far. I really hope it stays that way…
My mother-in-law has moved in with us to support us, so we are currently managing the girls, household etc. together – especially in view of the exceptional coronavirus situation. We both belong to the risk group, so to speak, but we’re sticking to „Stay at Home“.
What was it like
for you to lose your hair?
Yes, secretly
you kind of hope that you might be one of the 0.01% of cases
that don’t lose their hair and I had to swallow when the first
the first tufts actually fell… I had already shortened my hair in advance by
shortened my hair by more than half the length so that it wouldn’t be too blatant
is…
Because it then
itched so much on my head and there was all this hair everywhere, the
shaving it off was even a kind of liberation… Lenja wanted to cut her hair
then cut it too 😉 There was a little fringe 😉
Now you can see
you can just see the disease, because baldness is somehow already associated with cancer
associated with cancer… The wig still bothers me, so I’m wearing a cap for now
cap, as it’s already really cold on my head without hair.
To what extent
are you affected by the current situation due to the coronavirus?
The coronavirus situation is very, very difficult for Neele in particular – she misses her everyday life, her friends and especially our family. Now it’s becoming even more painful to realise that we’ll never sit together at the breakfast table again, never barbecue together in the garden again, never cuddle up together in the evening…
Many people have this „forced“ happiness, so to speak, thanks to/because of coronavirus. We all really miss the exquisite family time we’ve never had… Dad and Jonas – especially now…
I very much hope
that this exceptional corona situation will make everyone appreciate their lives
more consciously and appreciate their lives more – fate can simply change
change everything – whether through cancer, corona or something completely
something else…
I too
hope that we girls will regain a more and more piece-wide new everyday life
back – first with the corona circumstance and then again afterwards.
again..
Can you tell us
tell us how you said goodbye to your husbands – and to what extent you still
you still integrate them into your everyday life?
The funeral was very emotional. Basti’s fellow firefighters and St John Ambulance colleagues laid him to rest and it’s good to know that the two of them will live on in so many memories.
