Teenagers: Do they really need to sleep until 3 p.m.?

Dear readers, here’s another interesting question from a parent on the subject of teenagers. While we wish that our young children would finally sleep longer, we wonder when our teenagers will finally crawl out of bed. Our reader Ulrike would like to hear your opinion.

How long do your teenagers sleep?

I have three children, the oldest is 12 and is just entering her teenage years. However, my friends‘ children are older and I keep hearing that teenagers don’t get up until around 2 or 3 p.m. during the holidays and at weekends – and then, of course, they don’t go to bed until late at night. And I ask myself: why?

I totally understand that teenagers want to sleep in on weekends, and I know from my own experience: when I used to go to clubs, I slept in longer too. But teenagers aged 14, 15 or 16 don’t stay out out at night that they need to sleep in until 2 p.m. – or am I missing something?

I think it’s such a shame when teenagers don’t get out of bed until the afternoon, because half the day is wasted and the transition to getting up at a normal time during the week is brutally difficult.

I thought about how it was for me when I was 14 or 15. My parents ran a business and often had to get up early at the weekend, but they always woke us up at around 9:30 or 10:00 – simply so that the weekend wasn’t wasted. I can’t remember ever sleeping until 3:00 p.m. (not even when I was in a club).

I know that many mums with teenagers read this blog, and I just want to prepare myself a little for what’s to come. So I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts. How long do your teenagers stay up on weekends and when do they get up? If they sleep in, do you think that’s good or a shame? Thank you for sharing your experiences.
